How to Read a Stamp Listing: Year, Format, and Quantity
What "2024 Forever Stamps – 5 Sheets / 100 Stamps" actually means. Decode issue year, Forever vs. denominated, format, and quantity before you buy.
Stamp listings pack a lot of information into one line. A title like “2024 Autumn Colors Forever Stamps – 5 Sheets / 100 Stamps” tells you the issue year, the design, the postage type, the format, and the total count — and each of those changes what you are actually buying.
Here is how to decode it in about ten seconds.
Break the title into four parts
| Part | Example | What it tells you |
| Issue year | 2024 | When USPS released the design — not an expiration date |
| Design name | Autumn Colors | The artwork; purely cosmetic |
| Postage type | Forever | Valid for the current 1 oz rate, forever |
| Format and count | 5 Sheets / 100 Stamps | How many sheets, and the total number of stamps |
The issue year is not an expiry. A 2012 stamp is just as valid as a 2026 one. USPS says all stamps issued since 1860 remain valid for postage, and a Forever stamp from any year is worth today’s 1-ounce rate — $0.82 in 2026. You can confirm the current 1-ounce price on the USPS First-Class Mail page.
Forever vs. a printed denomination
- Forever — always covers one 1-ounce domestic First-Class letter, whatever you paid and whatever the rate is today. If rates rise next year, your stamp rises with them.
- A printed price (37¢, 10¢, $1.00) — worth exactly that amount, forever. Combine denominations to reach the current rate.
- Additional Ounce — worth the current extra-ounce price ($0.29 in 2026).
- Postcard — worth the current postcard price ($0.65).
- Global Forever — worth the 1-ounce international price ($1.75).
If a listing says “Forever,” you are buying one letter’s worth of postage per stamp. That is the one to buy for everyday mail.
Format: what “sheets,” “booklets,” and “coils” mean
The same stamp is often sold in several physical formats at the same price per stamp:
| Format | Typical count | Best for |
| Sheet (pane) | 20 stamps per sheet | Desk storage, gifts, keeping designs intact |
| Booklet | 20 stamps | Drawers, bags, everyday carry |
| Coil | 100, 3,000, 10,000 | High-volume mailing, dispensers |
“5 Sheets / 100 Stamps” simply means five panes of 20 — 100 stamps total. The math is always `sheets × 20`.
How to work out the price per stamp
Divide the price by the total stamp count, not by the sheet count. A listing at $25 for 100 stamps is 25¢ per stamp, against a $0.82 face value — roughly 70% off the counter price.
Comparing two listings? Compare price per stamp, and check that both are Forever. A cheaper denominated stamp is not a bargain if you need 82¢ of postage per letter.
Five things to check before you buy
- Is it Forever? If the listing does not say so, look for a printed denomination.
- How many stamps, not how many sheets. 5 sheets = 100 stamps, but a “booklet of 20” is just 20.
- Does the design matter to you? A wedding or holiday design is worth choosing deliberately; for invoices, anything works.
- Is it a coil? Coils are the same postage, just rolled — fine for volume, slightly awkward on a home desk.
- Is the seller clear about genuineness? Real USPS stamps have consistent perforations, clean printing, and a valid design. We covered the warning signs in Are Discount Forever Stamps Genuine?.
Frequently asked questions
Does the year on the listing mean the stamp expires?
No. The year is the issue date of the design. Postage never expires.
Are older-year designs less valuable?
No. A 2013 Forever stamp mails the same letter as a 2026 one. Only collectors care about the year, and for ordinary mail the face value is the whole story.
Why do some listings say “31.40 stamps” or other odd numbers?
Those are denominated or special-rate stamps, not standard 1-ounce Forever stamps. Check what rate the stamp covers before buying it for everyday letters.
Does the design affect how the stamp works?
Never. A floral stamp and a flag stamp of the same postage type mail the same letter.
